Dr. Colin Barbaro

Dr. Colin Barbaro is thrilled to be caring for the Pittsboro community following the retirement of Dr. N Rouse Wilson III. Dr. Barbaro brings with him a high level of advanced training from the Veterans Affairs Medical and Dental Center in San Antonio, TX. Due to his training, we are now able to offer procedures under IV sedation, as well as the ability to treat surgically complex dental implant cases which has been Dr. Barbaro’s passion since dental school.

Dr. Barbaro was born and grew up in Fayetteville, NC. After high school, he then followed two of his older brothers to Chapel Hill to pursue his bachelor’s degree in biology at UNC (with a minor in Tar Heel basketball). Dr. Barbaro loved Chapel Hill so much he decided to stay an additional 4 years to earn his Doctorate in Dental Surgery, where he met his future wife, Lauren, who is also a dentist. During his time in dental school, Dr. Barbaro developed a strong passion for dentoalveolar surgery with a special interest in implant surgery. He pursued this interest with research, multiple publications, and extensive surgical and restorative training during his residency in San Antonio.

Following graduation from UNC-Chapel Hill, Dr. Barbaro moved with his lovely wife down to San Antonio, TX in order to begin his Residency program at the South Texas VA hospital, with a focus on comprehensive dentistry, implant dentistry, and IV sedation. The San Antonio VA Residency program, regarded as the best level of training in the country, has provided Dr. Barbaro with many skills in implant dentistry both surgically and restoratively. Although dental implants are Dr. Colin’s passion, he received the highest level of training in all areas of dentistry including endodontics (root canal therapy), cosmetic dentistry, TMJ therapy, sleep apnea treatment, and Invisalign.

When Dr. Barbaro isn’t busy treating patients, he enjoys spending time with his wife, his 5 children, and their dog, Pearl. He also has a passion for all sports and a personal love for fishing, especially fly fishing.

Dr. Colin Barbaro’s treatment philosophy:

My passion is in treating people, not treating teeth. My goal is to come to work each day and hopefully make a positive difference in my patients’ lives by helping care for their oral health. I maintain a focus first on establishing a healthy mouth and secondly on restoring diseased mouths back to health be it through a simple filling or multiple dental implants. I have undergone extensive and comprehensive training in all aspects of Dentistry in hopes to be able to comprehensively care for my patients in a comfortable environment.

Dr. John Kizer

Dr. John Kizer grew up nearby in Chapel Hill, NC (Go Heels!) He received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. Prior to dental school, Dr. Kizer owned a custom woodworking business after being awarded an Associate of Applied Science degree in fine and creative woodworking from Rockingham Community College. Dr. Kizer has always enjoyed art, design, and the dexterity involved in creating one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture. It was this passion, coupled with a desire to pursue a career in the health field, that led him to dentistry. Much like his furniture, he understands that no two patient’s needs are the same, each patient is unique and every treatment is patient-specific.

Dr. Kizer is also a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Dentistry, in Richmond, where he was recognized for excellence in prosthodontics. Upon graduation, Dr. Kizer completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency with East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. In residency, Dr. Kizer received training in complex dentistry, including anterior crown and bridges, esthetics, molar endodontics, implant placement, full mouth rehabilitation, and periodontal and oral surgery.

During his time away from the office, Dr. Kizer enjoys mountain biking, woodworking, watching UNC sports, hiking, camping, and spending time with family and friends. Dr. Kizer lives in Chapel Hill with his wife, Alexandra, and son, John. He is thrilled to be back in the area caring for the wonderful people of Pittsboro and surrounding communities.

“It wasn’t that I chose dentistry, it was more that dentistry chose me. I became inextricably intertwined with the profession as I made my journey through life. I love being able to use the hand skills and the passion for aesthetics that I honed over multiple decades in woodworking to help people achieve their dental needs.”

Dr. Mark Cummings

Dr. Mark Cummings, a fellow Chatham County resident, is thrilled to join the team at Chatham Family & Implant Dentistry. As a pediatric dentist, he brings with him a wealth of experience and ability to better serve the children of our community!

Dr. Cummings attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke where he earned a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry. He then continued on to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. Following graduation, he worked as a general dentist in the Fayetteville area. As a general dentist, Dr. Mark worked with many adult patients who had a fear of dentistry. He learned that for most of these patients, this fear stemmed from experiences as a child. During this time, he developed a true passion to help his youngest patients through their toughest times in the dental chair. He realized that by starting with positive dental experiences early in a child’s life, this would foster a brighter dental future. This led Dr. Cummings to return to school for more education to become a pediatric dentist!

In 2018, Dr. Cummings returned to training and completed a two-year Pediatric Dental Residency at East Carolina University. This advanced training in pediatric care allows him to focus on creating a positive relationship with his younger patients through specialized treatment. He now looks forward to working with Chatham’s greatest dental patients in an environment where they feel safe and have fun going to the dentist!

Outside of the office, Dr. Mark loves to spend his free time with his wife, Caitlin, and two daughters, Sophia and Capel. When he is not in the office, you can find him outside in his yard. He enjoys growing hot peppers for spicy recipes, tomatoes and garlic for homemade marinara sauce, and tending to his roses and Japanese Maples.

Dr. Mark’s treatment philosophy:

Each child comes with their unique perspective to the dental office, and this must be a top consideration when it comes to their experience in the dental setting. Some children walk into the dental office with no apprehension at all, while there may be others who need a little encouragement through small positive experiences to build upon. I truly value the unique opportunity I have to impact how my patients view their dental health as a child and as they grow into young adults.
